The noble gases are the most stable elements out of all the elements in the periodic table. Their valence electron levels are full and have no tendancy to react with other elements. For a noble gas in a neutral state, there is not net charge (which means the noble gas atoms have the number of electrons equal to the number of protons). The outer shell or valence level of an atom from the noble gas family is full and contains 8 electrons, except for Helium which contains 2 electrons in the outer s orbitals. The other nobel gases Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, and Rn all have 8 electrons in their valence level, 2 in the outer s orbital and 6 in the outer p orbitals. The number of neutrons is suppose to be about the same number of protons. As you go down the list of noble gases from Helium to Radon, The number of neutrons becomes more than the number of protons.
