The Different Stages of A Woman's Life
Film- The Day I Became A woman, 2001
In the movie, the day I became a woman: 2001, is entirely focused on the feminism topic
by addressing the lives of women at different stages of their lives and the challenges they go
through to fit into the society. Marzieh Meshkini, the director of this three-episode segmented
movie, displays the societal perceptions of the female figure and how that affects their freedom.
The film is based on the Iranian culture where women are not allowed to participate in certain
activities in obedience to Islamic law. The three stages discussed in every episode have one thing
in common, which is to discriminate against the female gender in terms of what one can and
cannot do. A little girl, young wife and a senior woman are all going through different life
experiences, but their femininity puts them at a disadvantage as displayed through the film (The
Film Sufi, 2016).
The first episode is about a girl who struggles to attain independence and freedom in her
childhood but cannot do that because of her family traditions of how someone her age is
expected to behave. Havva must abandon some activities like hanging out with boys before she
celebrates her ninth birthday as the Islamic law requires an individual to leave her childhood
