Description

Assessment Instructions

For this assessment, complete the following:

  • Compile a list of twenty significant cultural developments from the past. You may use the Personal Significance activities (linked in the Resources under the Capella Multimedia heading) to help assemble this list:
    • Describe the cultural developments you noted and then evaluate their application to modern life.
    • Notice any compelling themes here. Are there any common themes or persistent forms of expression, or especially vital historical periods among your choices? Think about what the items you selected say about who you are and what gives your life meaning.
  • Consider how these developments impact your everyday life in a personal way. The cultural background of humanities disciplines provide some structure, of course, but what really matters are your own feelings, perceptions, thoughts, and decisions.
    • How does an understanding of the humanities impact your life?
    • How do you integrate the philosophical, religious, and aesthetic values of the humanities into daily living?

This essay will be an intensely personal one; make it a worthwhile exercise.

    Context

Applying the Humanities in Daily Life

Study of the humanities properly includes crucial features of contemporary life: social and political movements, scientific and technological achievements, literary and artistic developments, and ecological and terrorist challenges. Indeed, we can see all of these by looking at today's newspaper. But let us also think about how to project ourselves forward, into the future. How shall our own expression of the humanities proceed? What feelings, perceptions, thoughts, and decisions should guide the decades to come?
Following this historical review of the contributions made by those of previous centuries, we would do well to keep in mind two inclinations that often have contrary effects on human judgment. On the one hand, we like to believe that our achievements over time constitute progress, that our understanding of the world and of ourselves is always moving forward, and that the future can only be even brighter than the present. On the other hand, we commonly suppose that the future holds unique threats, that things are not as good now as they were during some past golden age, and that they are bound to become even worse in the days to come. Hope for the future and nostalgia for the past are likely to appear at both the cultural and the personal levels.
Perhaps, most of us will find the deepest meaning for our lives when we follow both paths. We can select past contributions that most inspire us to create a better future for ourselves and the generations that follow. May the integration of the humanities into our daily lives honor what has been, celebrate what is now, and help us choose what is to come.
  • Questions to Consider

To deepen your understanding, you are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of the business community.

As we face the challenges of a global culture that relies on nearly instantaneous transmission of digital information, consider characteristics should we expect from leaders in the future.

  • What have you learned by studying the contributions made by exceptional individuals of the past during our study of the humanities. Also, think about your own personal and professional experiences. (As a CRITICAL CARE NURSE)
  • What crucial skills will be most essential for the leaders of tomorrow? What are you doing to develop those skills today?

Cultural Developments in the Past
The term culture refers to the ideas, behaviors and social conduct of a group of people
developed over time. There are two defining features of culture; it is practiced by a significant
part of a group of people, and it must have been practiced over a fairly long period. It is also
important to note that cultures are not static. Cultures are influenced by a wide range of factors.
Thus, cultures change with time as people appreciate new ideas or new ways of doing things. For
instance, the development in agricultural technology has made some of the methods and tools
which were used in agricultural practices centuries to be obsolete. In this paper, the purpose is to
discuss some of the cultural changes in the past and their relevance in modern life.
End of Majority
Towards the end of the 20th century, changes occurred in the cultural composition in
major cities in the United States. While there were cities which were predominantly white,
meaning that the majority of city dwellers were whites, changes occurred and these cities were
penetrated by people from a wide range of cultural and racial backgrounds. Today, it is difficult
to find a city which is occupied and controlled by only a single racial group. During the years of
the ethnic majority, some racial or ethnic groups were not allowed to penetrate some regions. For
example, there are regions which were dominated by blacks, and when they saw a white man in
the region, he would be expelled. These trends collapsed, and today people are free to move to
any city without much fear of being harassed or bused. The importance of this cultural
development to modern life is that all people are free to move to whichever part of the country
without fear of racial attacks (Ferro, 2016). Today, even if I am to move into a black
neighborhood and reside among them, there would be no much apprehension. The fact that racial

tensions have subsided in the county has made it possible for all people to move freely and
conduct the businesses wherever they want.
Globalization
Globalization is another important cultural development which occurred in the past.
Globalization is a process through which businesses and other political or social institutions
grow and move out of the boundaries of their countries to have an international presence.
Essentially, globalization is a system of interaction which allows people from across the world to
interact to accomplish their objectives. One of the legacies of globalization is opening up of
space for businesses to set up operations in many parts of the world. Today, there are many
American businesses which have pertains in many parts of the world. The McDonald's, General
Motors and Wal-Mart are some of the American companies which have a presence in many parts
of the world. Personally, globalization has been beneficial to me in many ways. Globalization
has made it possible to transfer American culture to other parts of the world. Today, if I want to
go to China or any Asian country, I will not be worried about Chinese cuisine since American
cuisine culture has penetrated these countries.
Communication
Communication is an important aspect of a culture. The manner in which people
communicate including the m...
