Watch the following video: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/steve_jobs_how_to...

Vision and culture are at the heart of our very being. We are motivated by internal and external factors, we set goals, we strive for success, and we think a great deal about our future. We then surround ourselves with the culture needed to create that “success” or vision for ourselves. Steve Jobs did this with Apple Computers. He also did this in his life. Creating vision and culture requires an ability to tell a story.

Describe your thoughts of this speech (or story) Steve gave at Stanford. What does storytelling mean to you? How do you use storytelling to guide and lead others?

Storytelling Ariez Sime posted Apr 26, 2019 12:27 PM Subscribe I really enjoyed Steve Jobs speech. I think his part about connecting the dots is important and how you can think about about the person you are today. I recently heard another speech from Jocko Willink about making daily decisions to make yourself better and I think that ties in well with Jobs' message about the person you will be 5 years from now. I think good storytelling can be invaluable to an organization. Being able to tell a good story in anything from a professional presentation to more causal encounter, It can turn any bad situation into a positive one by portraying a valuable lesson. I personally use storytelling when talking to my younger brothers about some of the mistakes I made when I was their age and how it has affected me. There is a reason there are many stories in many cultures the give valuable lessons. They are an effective and relatable way to get the point across and they are more effective than simply telling someone how to act directly. How to Live Before You Die Brady Beier posted Apr 25, 2019 6:08 PM Subscribe I thought that Steve's speech was not only very interesting, but it was also very inspiring. To me story telling is something that can be used as a tool to learn. From my personal experiences, hearing stories from people has helped me learn a lot over the years. I found this to be particularly true when hearing stories from my Grandfather. It always gave me a new perspective and reminded me how good I have life. When helping others like mentioned before, I use story telling as a tool for them to learn. Everyone can learn from mistakes, so telling a story of someone making an error or failing in the past can help people learn. Being a construction major, this especially applies to me. When I first started working construction at age 17, I was always told stories of someone messing up and something catastrophic happening. This helped me learn very quickly, making sure to avoid any of those stories happening to me. How to Live Before You Die Mackenzie Nicholson posted Apr 24, 2019 11:03 AM Subscribe Steve Jobs speech was very inspiring. I thought he did a great job getting his point across through storytelling and left a strong impression on the graduating students in the audience. Being a senior myself I definitely appreciated hearing his speech. From his speech I learned that you can't connect the dots for your future you have to follow your heart and trust that you are headed in the right direction. I also learned that you can't lose faith because you will eventually find what your Looking for. For me I think storytelling is a way to recreate memories of your past and present and use them as life lessons. I definitely use storytelling from my own experiences to help others make correct decisions. There has been many times where I have used storytelling to help others that may be going through the same thing but won't listen to your advice but through storytelling they are very attentive to what you are saying. I think storytelling is a great way to get your point across in a different way that others may relate or be interested in. Module 6: Storytelling Tricia Defiel posted Apr 23, 2019 3:46 PM Subscribe My thoughts about Steve Jobs' speech was that it was very good, inspiring, and interesting to hear about his experiences. I really connected to each of the stories he told. I really enjoyed his speech on connecting the dots. Graduation is in less than two weeks and it can be a little scary leaving the comfort of college and going out and joining the real working world. His advance about following your heart and believing in what you are doing and finding something you love I think is very important Storytelling is important to me. We are surrounded by it all the time. We watch movies and tv shows with story lines. We read books and listen to music that tell stories. Sometimes we hear stories from our family or friends. Many of these stories shape the way we think and help guide us on life. I grew up listening to my mom talk about food science my entire life and now I will graduate with a food science degree. Stories helps influence and shape the type of people we want to become or don't want to become.
