More companies are turning to the online application process over the traditional paper methods. What are the advantages and challenges for both employers and candidates? How does the online process affect you as a candidate? How will you customize your online job search?

The online application process is more popular and attractive to companies today because of the fast, efficient, and cost effective.  When employers review the online applications, they can use software to eliminate candidates whose resumes do not have certain skills listed in the resume.  For example if an employer is looking for an AutoCAD engineer, that employer may screen for resumes that have the word "AutoCAD experience" in the resume, which does make sense.  

Employers can use software to filter out resumes based on a candidate's experience, hence making the process faster and efficient.  The online application does not only contain the resume of the applicant, but has the test results and question and response information.  The employer can filter out more candidates this way too.

The online process is cost effective because it saves the employer's staffing resource. Instead of using one of the Company's workers to set aside time to interview a candidate and test for compatibility, the software in the online application does that for the company.  Thus that saves the worker's time and pay time for the company.

The online application process is beneficial for the job-seeker in the fact that submitting the application is very fast.  However the online application process is not so good for the job seeker because of the competition among candidates.  The online application will receive more applications for a job than via the traditional methods.  There will be too many qualified candidates for a position, which means the program will have to eliminate all but one of the qualified candidates.

Online applications seem to reward job seekers on how well they can formulate a resume and answer online assessments.  However the online application does not test if the candidate can really do the job.  It is best to have a person to actually interview and get to know all the candidates that can do the job.  Otherwise a company may hire someone that is good at creating a false impression online and not able to do the job.

The online process has affected me greatly.  I have been out of work for 6 years because of the nature of online applications.  I have to somehow use the right words, format the resume in the right way and answer questions that the company wants to hear.  My solution to this was to find a temporary staffing agency to get a job.  

I realized I have to use the right words in the resume according to the job description.
