Nutrition for Success

Introduction
Nutritional science is a field in science that deals with understanding how the body
breaks down or catabolism and repairs and creates tissues and cells or anabolism. Catabolism
and anabolism combined are referred to as the metabolism. This field of science is also
responsible for understanding how our bodies respond to food intake. For the human body to
work better, it requires seven essential nutrients. These nutrients are vitamins, proteins, water,
minerals, carbohydrates, fibers, and fats. It is also important to note that not all these nutrients
provide energy to the body, but are also very crucial, like fibers and water (Whitney, 2018).
There is also another class of minerals called micronutrients. These are the nutrients that are
required in a small amount (Smolin, 1994). They are also very essential in the body. The human
body cannot synthesize vitamins, although they are crucial and hence must be obtained from
other sources.
Nutrition, therefore, can be described as a process in which substances like these
nutrients are broken down and transformed from one form to another. Nutrition also mainly
focuses on how conditions, diseases, and other problems can be reduced or prevented while one
start focusing on a healthy diet. The field also focuses on how certain diseases and health
conditions may be brought about as a result of dietary factors, such as assuming a poor diet like
malnutrition, food intolerances, and food allergies.
It is often confusing between dietitian and nutritionist. However, although a lot of people
uses these two words interchangeably, there is a clear difference between them a dietitian is any
registered person and is an expert in dietetics. They deal with human nutrition and also the

regulation of diets. A nutritionist, on the other hand, is an expert in matters that are relation
nutrition and food and their effects on human health. It is essential to study nutrition as there are
so many health problems that arise from a poor diet. Some of the health problems include, but
not limited to, obesity, cardiovascular problems, diabetes, and hypoglycemia.
There are also health problems that arise from the lack of having a shortage in particular
nutrients. For example, Schizophrenia is a health condition that is associated with having low
levels of zinc in the body and also having high levels of copper. There are several chronic mental
conditions like anorexia, depression, and hyperactivity that can be dealt with through addressing
the issue of dietary input in children, both the quality, quantity, and timing of the diet.
Etiology
There are several causes of undernutrition in our bodies. Undernutrition is a deficiency of
one or several essential nutrients in our bodies. There are two types of undernutrition, general or
partial. Widespread malnutrition describes a total reduction in food uptake, also called hollow
hunger while partial undernutrition refers to a deficiency of one or several of these nutrients, also
called hidden hunger. Primary malnutrition mostly results from the intake of a poor diet while
the secondary undernutrition results mostly from diseases that alter the normal uptake and
assimilation of food in the body (Khan, 2017). Several words can be used to describe
malnutrition depending on the degree to which the person has been affected by the problem.
These words are mild, moderate or severe, where the conditions are severe and can even result in
death if not correctly taken care of.
Some of the causes of undernutrition and malnutrition include: poverty, ignorance, ill
health and accidents, drug addiction, environmental factors and lastly individual factors. Poverty

can result from the weak economy in a given country which means that people will not be able to
have the purchasing power to buy foodstuffs that are rich in nutrients. Low-income society will
often buy low quality foodstuff that has little nutrient value....
