A status is one's social position in a group or society. An ascribed status is the status
assigned at birth. Therefore, one of my ascribed statuses is an American since I was born in
America. Achieved status is an acquired position that is based on merit — my achieved status as
a student since I have worked to get where I am. Finally, master status is a position that is a
