Introduction The Pi Pi chapter of Jefferson State Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa honors society has long been known for its historically outstanding performance. Established in 1977, Pi Pi soon lead the school, the state, and the national organization as being top rated in community projects, student involvement, and leadership development. By 2006 with over 1,800 chapter awards, Pi Pi was ranked as the most decorated chapter out of over 1900 chapters worldwide. This prestigious record shows how the chapter has exemplified the mission of Phi Theta Kappa which is as follows: Mission The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa shall be to recognize and encourage scholarship among twoyear college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence. Phi Theta Kappa's mission is two-fold: 1. Recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and; 2. Provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, Thousands of Students leadership, service and fellowship programming. With the addition of three new campuses and the establishment of another Phi Theta Kappa chapter, Beta Lambda Delta, at the newer campuses, the Pi Pi chapter has seen healthy competition, but recently it has become apparent that this competition has certain advantages. One advantage is the updated buildings. Students prefer to take classes at the nicer campuses and thus end up joining the correlating Phi Theta Kappa chapter. In addition, the newer facilities house the main campus related to the culinary school and the chapter is able to utilize their services for events and receptions. These are just two resources that place the Pi Pi chapter at a disadvantage. It can be seen through the enrollment numbers for the newer campuses, which have steadily increases by 10% for the past 10 years, that while JSCC is experiencing growth, the older campus is showing a decrease, by 3%, in student enrollment. When surveyed, students complain about the deteriorating facilities and seemingly administrative favoritism placed on the newer campuses. Within Pi Pi’s internal statistics, enrollment and participation has decreased by 32% in the past five years. In the past two years, the chapter has not earned any regional or national awards, with the acceptation of individual member awards. This once prestigious chapter has dropped out of the top 100 chapters in the nation and sits uncomfortably far away from Beta Lambda Delta’s national ranking of 7th. It is in the interest of JSCC to reevaluate how the Jefferson campus’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter is being organized and promoted because once JSCC’s previously leading student organization is thriving and back in honorable standings, it will undoubtedly draw more students to the Jefferson campus and increase enrollment and participation. With increased enrollment, funds may then be directed to renovations of our oldest and most important campus it comes to preserving both our community college and national honor society. 5 2. (This will be measured by a student survey performed at the beginning of the year and then by a follow-up survey at the end of the year.) Based on the results of this evaluation, a plan for the next year will be discussed and agreed upon by the Change Team. Objectives with positive results will be challenged to grow and increase their reach of success. Objectives with negative results will be researched to discover why the plan might have failed and if they should be reattempted. Regardless of results, the Change Team will challenge themselves to name 2 new objectives for the 2018-2019 school year.
