SIGNIFICANT HISTORICAL EVENTS
The Five Most Significant Events from the Period 1100 BCE to 1660 CE
One of the five most significant events during these times was the publishing of the first
encyclopedia. This is the earliest historical work that has survived to the modern era by a Roman
person who lived in 79 CE recognized as the Naturalis Historia of Pliny the Elder. The work
comprised thirty-seven chapters which covered natural history, medicine, geology, architecture,
geography and other events that were happening around the author. The author introduced the
encyclopedia by stating that he had compiled more than 20, 000 facts from different 2000 works
done by more than 200 authors as well as his own experiences ("Pliny the Elder, Natural History",
2019).
The work was published between 77-79 CE. The encyclopedia combined the different
disciplines for the first-time allowing people to access information about the history of their
nations, the environment, diseases and how they could be treated and architectural art. Although
the author did not have the time to distinguish between opinion, speculation, and fact in the 37chapter encyclopedia, his work commendable because his work ended up serving as the primary
source of both scientific theory and information in the western world ("Pliny the Elder, Natural
History", 2019).
This encyclopedia would remain in use until around 1492 CE when another author
questioned the usefulness and accuracy of natural history citing errors in the manner Pliny, the
Elder documented it. The work of Pliny the Elder was later superseded 17th century when scientific
methods were applied in making empirical observations thus replacing speculation. The
encyclopedia is important because it provided a way for studying the world whose ideas and
information are used in teaching in schools today around the world ("Pliny the Elder, Natural
History", 2019).
