Basketball is one of the most popular sports that has fans and players globally. It was
first invented in 1891 by Naismith who was a lecturer at the University of Kansas. While
inventing the game, he was looking for a game that would be played indoors in a relatively
small space during the England winters. The sport has now grown to be a global sport, and it
has elite players who sign multimillion dollar. This year, I got to attend a college basketball
game in the USA. I'm from a Southeast Asia country, currently studying in the States. Due to
the different cultures, I was able to identify several differences between the two cultures.
Below are some of the differences between the two cultures.
Here in America, basketball is one of the most popular games and has a lot of fans.
The sport is most common in urban streets where space is limited, and the fields are far
between each other. Research shows that over 47 percent of Americans consider themselves
to be basketball fans. Kids who grow up in these neighborhoods, fall in love with the game.
They grow up to love the game and present their colleges in such games. College basketball
games are some of the most competitive games in the country. They offer a lot of
entertainment; hence they attract a lot of people from different cultures. College games have
influenced companies and offices to start their competitions. Basketball has also influenced
American culture. In the beginning, African Americans were not allowed to participate in
such competitions. However, currently, they are allowed to play the game. The civil
authorities and colleges use the game to allow diverse groups in the country to interact. The
culture has also produced some of the greatest players of all time such as James Lebron and
Kobi Bryant. Such names have become household names not only in the USA but globally
even for people who don`t enjoy basketball. They act as good role models to children who
live in the streets that their artwork can make them enjoy life. The game also prevents
violence in the country ("Effects of the Game of Basketball on America | Livestrong.com,"
n.d.). It is used to unite people and keep them busy and prevent them from behaviors such as
