General information
This paper analysis failure in bevel gears. Bevel gears have a wide range of applications in the
industry. They are used to transmit power between two shafts inclined at any angle. The shaft that is
connected to the prime mover is called a driver while the other connected to the load is called the
pinion. The diagrams below show different types of bevel gears.

The most common material used to manufacture bevel gears is carbon steel for structural
machine usage. It has a tensile strength of 490N/mm2 and a hardness of between 143 – 235 HB. During
the material forming of this alloy, heat treatment is applied since it is a low carbon steel. High hardness
