Why do families wait so long before making a decision to move their loved ones into a safe environment?
I had a resident whose sons were shopping for a facility for her. They said she kept falling at home, back and forth to the hospital. Six months later they came back, and said she couldn't go home, wasn't safe, and is in the hospital because she fell through the glass coffee table. Yikes!
Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!
The main reason is from fear of jurdgement for their social cyrcle . As weird as it may sound theres a quite big portion of the population that views getting your loved one to a facility is a form of abandoment . So do so projects a negative image to the society , as you either didnt fullfill your obligation to care for them or took the easy road of paying someone else (a facility) to do that job for you . This kind of thinking is more common people of east europian and asian origin people where family is the most important value.
A second reason is plain denial that their loved one can still manage life at home without major help . People ofter fall into denial when theres a loved one involved simply because they dont think straight .
A third reason is the fincancial cost .
Also theres a big portion out there who thinks that they can manage and when sufficient time passes with incidents that proves that is not the case , only then decide it is time to go to a care facility .
