Moliere’s “Tartuffe” Enlightenment text
The Enlightenment elucidates the rational, philosophic and scientific spirit of the age.
Molière wrote Tartuffe during the time in which the Catholic Church had a great influence on
society. He sarcastically wrote his works to reveal hypocrisy in Christianity during that time. This
was as a result of the use of religion as a means of personal gain and superiority without the use
and application of spiritual virtue. As a result of the powerful influence of religion, the opposition
from paying attention the voice of reason has led to a turmoil and lack of sight from the fact.
Themes of Enlightenment are typically outlined In “Tartuffe.”
Religion is observed as a powerful tool in manipulation and domination in every believer.
For instance, integrity, application of one's reasoning and virtues are much stressed by Orgon’s
family. Orgon and Madame Pernelle, who are head of the family, have become instinctively
ignorant of truth under Tartuffe’s powerful use of religion by failing to use their reason. Religion
is therefore seen as a trap that anyone can use by applying religious virtues hypocritical manner to
mislead the society way of thinking and follow religious instruct them.
Religion is a serious subject to enlightenment. Religion has dominated many societies
especially those of lower-class levels as Moliere suggest religion seriously practiced by the poor.
