MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE ASSESSMENT WMAT123 MATHEMATICS123 ASSESSMENT DETAILS Unit Name: Assessment Task: Total # Pages: Mathematics 123 Group Work Video 5 Total Marks: 20 marks Unit Code: Term & Year: Weighting: WMAT123 Term 2, 2019 10% NATURE OF THE TASK Students will produce a 5-7 minute video on any mathematical concept relevant to the topics of WMAT123. This is a group assessment task. Your teacher will assist you to form a group of 3-5 people from students enrolled within your class in WMAT123. This task is worth 10% in total, with the group video worth 5% and the remaining 5% allocated to each student’s individual performance. INSTRUCTIONS As a group, create a video describing an aspect or application of mathematics. This could include an economic model, or a more in-depth analysis of a topic treated in the unit. Each group will choose their own topic. Note that students are expected to share research and preparation duties and to create a coherent video. Your video should: • Contain a slide listing all students’ full names and student IDs in the order that students appear in the video. • Each student should appear in the video (this means that each student must appear in person, and each student should clearly identify themselves) and their part in the video should be clearly defined. • Demonstrate collaboration between the group members. • Provide some background on the topic. • Contain a conceptual explanation of the mathematical model being used, including any assumptions. • Contain an interpretation of the results/conclusions of the mathematical model, and the insight this provides. • Include some comments on the implications of the results and conclusions, including relevant comments on any social, environmental and/or ethical implications. Students do not need to include in “full detail” the mathematics underlying the model studied — emphasis should be on the concepts. The video should be 5-7 minutes long. The maximum duration allowed is 8 minutes. A penalty of 20% per minute will apply to videos of more than 8 minutes and less than 5 minutes. 1 Please note: • You are not allowed to be in more than one group. • Group members who have not contributed or do not appear to have contributed will not receive marks. It is essential that the contribution of each individual can be clearly identified. • Group members will not necessarily receive the same marks. MATERIALS REQUIRED / SUGGESTED RESOURCES For this assessment you will need to create a video: • A Video is a narration with fast moving images. e.g. http://goo.gl/yrn4eA Students will need to use a Windows PC/Apple Mac and a digital video camera, which you can find on many devices, such as most modern smart phones and laptops. To find out more about what a video is and how to create one click on the appropriate instructions in the link below. • Video instructions — http://digiexplanations.com/video.html If you are using a Windows machine you may need to download a movie editor. If you do not already have one – look in the Windows App Store for free movie editors. If you are using a Mac, you may need to download iMovie. If you do not already have it, go to: http://www.apple.com/au/mac/imovie/ If you already have or like different software, feel free to use it. SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS Only one group member can upload. Upload the video or link to iLearn. Please note that the maximum file size is 500MB. If your file is greater than 500MB then use a YouTube link. LATE SUBMISSIONS Late submissions are possible and will be penalised according to the rules stipulated in the Unit Guide up to 3 days (weekend inclusive). If a student submits an assessment task 3 or more days after the due date without grounds for special consideration (See Special Consideration Policy), a record of submission will be made but the student will receive zero marks for the assessment task. RETENTION OF RECORDS Students are required to keep a copy of all items submitted or completed for the purpose of assessment or evaluation until the end of the grade appeal period. INFORMATION ABOUT HOW AND WHEN FEEDBACK WILL BE PROVIDED The marks for the Group Work Video will become available by Monday Week 7 in Gradebook in iLearn. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Using the work or ideas of another person, whether intentionally or not, and presenting them as your own without clear acknowledgement of the source is called Plagiarism. Macquarie University promotes awareness of information ethics through its Academic Integrity Policy. This means that: • • • all academic work claimed as original must be the work of the person making the claim all academic collaborations of any kind must be acknowledged academic work must not be falsified in any way 2 • when the ideas of others are used, these ideas must be acknowledged appropriately. All breaches of the Academic Integrity Policy are serious and penalties apply. Students should be aware that they may fail an assessment task, a unit or even be excluded from the University for breaching the Academic Integrity Policy. EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS Students are responsible for their learning and are expected to: • Actively engage with assessment tasks, including carefully reading the guidance provided, understanding criteria, spending sufficient time on the task and submitting work on time. • Actively engage in activities designed to develop assessment literacy, including taking the initiative where appropriate (e.g. seeking clarification or advice, negotiating learning contracts, developing grading criteria and rubrics). • Ensure that their work is their own; and • Be familiar with University policy and faculty procedures and act in accordance with those policy and procedures. • Provide constructive feedback on assessment processes and tasks through student feedback mechanisms (e.g. student surveys, suggestions for future offerings, student representation on committees). • Read, reflect and act on feedback provided. MARKING CRITERIA You will be assessed according to the criteria provided on the next page. The video submission will be marked out of 20, but has a 10% weighting. (10 marks) Content: The topic, application, or mathematical model being presented is relevant to WMAT123. Sufficiently complex material is included to provide useful insights into the topic. Relevant social, environmental, or ethical implications are addressed as appropriate. The content is wellresearched, accurate, and backed up with referenced evidence and sources. (5 marks) Communication and interest: The video is a well-constructed, cohesive, interesting and engaging explanation of the material. Is the explanation clear? Logical? Complete? Is it understandable and interesting to a general first-year university student? (5 marks) Digital Media Proficiency and Presentation: The video is well made, with clear video, sound and transitions. Is there unwanted background noise? Are all diagrams/text clear and legible? Has an appropriate presentation style been used for the content? 3 WMAT123 Group Work Video Rubric – GROUP MARKING SHEET WMAT123 Group Number: Marker’s Name: Fail • Content relevant to WMAT123 (10 marks) GROUP COMPONENT Presentation consists of a series of points unrelated to the topic Marker’s Initial: Pass • Content generally relevant to the topic Credit • Content relevant to the topic Distinction • Content clearly and logically organised High Distinction • Content expertly selected & organised Group Mark • Some points adequately developed and complex • All points generally adequately developed and complex • All points well developed, good level of complexity • All points very well developed and complex No figures or inappropriate figures • Figures generally appropriate but contribute little to the argument • Appropriate figures contribute somewhat to the argument • Figures contribute to overall argument • Figures greatly contribute to overall argument • Relevant social, environmental or ethical implications are not covered or covered superficially • Relevant social, environmental or ethical implications are covered adequately • Relevant social, environmental or ethical implications are covered with a good level of depth • Relevant social, environmental or ethical implications are covered with a very good level of depth • Relevant social, environmental or ethical implications are covered with an excellent level of depth • Sources included are irrelevant and/or unreliable. • Some sources are used, but they are not all reliable or relevant. • Relevant/reliable sources are used. • Relevant/reliable sources are used. • Relevant/reliable sources are used. • Points inadequately developed • (0 – 4 marks) MARKS (4.5 – 6 marks) (6.5 – 7 marks) (7.5 – 8 marks) _____/10 (8.5 – 10 marks) 4 WMAT123 Group Work Video Rubric – INDIVIDUAL MARKING SHEET Student ID: Name: Fail Communication and Interest Pass Credit Distinction Individual Mark: • Somewhat interesting and engaging • Usually interesting and engaging • Most of the time interesting and engaging • Very interesting and engaging throughout • Explanation is not clear, logical or complete • Explanation is clear, logical and complete with some mishaps • Explanation is clear, logical and complete with few mishaps • Explanation is generally clear, logical and complete • Explanation of the material is clear, logical and complete throughout (0 – 1 marks) • The video is poorly constructed and not cohesive (2.5 – 3 marks) (1.5 – 2 marks) • The video is generally well constructed and cohesive with occasional mishaps • (3.5 – 4 marks) The video is generally well constructed and cohesive with very few mishaps • The video is generally well constructed and cohesive (4.5 – 5 marks) • The video is very wellconstructed and cohesive • Visual aids largely unrelated to the topic • Visual aids generally related to the topic • Visual aids related to the topic • Visual aids contribute clearly to the topic • Visual aids contribute expertly to the topic • Large amounts of information presented on visual aids • Some visual aids over-loaded with information • Visual aids contain appropriate amounts of information • Visual aids are well designed & clear • Visual aids are very well designed & clear • Poorly coordinated with oral presentation • Generally coordinated with oral presentation • Visual aids coordinated with oral presentation • Visual aids are well co-ordinated with oral presentation • Visual aids are expertly coordinated with oral presentation (0 – 1 marks) (1.5 – 2 marks) (2.5 – 3 marks) _____/5 Individual Mark: _____/5 (5 marks) INDIVIDUAL COMPONENT MARKS Not very interesting and engaging INDIVIDUAL COMPONENT /10 High Distinction • (5 marks) Digital Media Proficiency and Presentation Mark: (3.5 – 4 marks) (4.5 – 5 marks) 5
