There are 5 surfaces on this square pyramid.  You a square base, and four triangles.

The square base has an area = 9* 9 = 81 sq. ft.

Each of the four triangles has a height of 12 ft and a base of 9 ft.

The area of the four triangles is found by the formula = (1/2)*(base perimeter)*(slant height) = (1/2)*(4*9)*(12) = 216 sq. ft.

Total surface Area = 81 + 216 = 297 sq. ft.
