What was mercantilism? How did governments pursue mercantilist policies?

What did the English, French, Spanish, and Dutch hope to accomplish in their colonies in America?

 In this system, the British colonies were moneymakers for the mother country. The British put restrictions on how their colonies spent their money so that they could control their economies. Primary objective of this practice was to make colonizers rich and powerful.

The tools used for mercantilism are military powers/war, treaties with local rulers. Military was also used to fend of competition from taking over ones enterprise.

 Dutch, Spanish, English and French wanted monopoly over the trade from America. And take as much as gold from them. Also they wanted to create market for their manufactured goods in America.
