x + y = 65 --- (1)
The smaller number is 9 less than the larger number.
y = x - 9 ---(2)
Substitute y from equation (2) in equation (1)
x + x - 9 = 65
2x = 65 + 9
2x = 74
x = 74/2
x = 37
Substitute value of x in equation (2)
y = 37 - 9
y = 28
So the numbers are 37 and 28.
