Abstract

Black and Hispanic students score lower grades that White students on average scores. Blacks
have historically scored less than whites on reading, vocabulary, mathematical tests as well as
aptitude and intelligence tests. The gap seems to be more persistence as children enter
kindergarten but also progress and widens as they become teenagers and adults. This study thus
investigates the connection between race and intelligence as the possible cause of the racial
achievement gap. Also, the environment and family financial income have an important role in
influencing the intelligence level of an individual. However, some people may argue that some
races are inherently academically gifted and thus environment and genetics has an impact on
intelligence level.

The purpose of this literature review is to determine if there exists a relationship between
race and intelligence. The existence of racial achievement gap which is the difference in
educational levels between the various races could provide the basis for understanding race and
intelligence. The several measures that are essential in determining the racial achievement gap
include the grade point average, standardized test scores, and high school dropout rates among
various ethnic groups. The research results on the study conducted by Atske and Kennedy (2019)
indicates that Blacks and Hispanic students are likely to attain lower grades on science
knowledge compared to White students. They are also expected to drop out of high school and
fail to achieve a college education and also, blacks and Hispanic students who are in college still
score lower grades in science knowledge than white students. Different scholars have also
