Classical theory is based on the following elements; that people should have free will in deciding on how to deal with the offenders, crime may be mitigated when the offenders are threatened with punishment, and punishment is perceived to be severe and can control criminal behavior. While positivist approach advocates for statistical based method; it argues that societal factors are likely to to predict the characteristics which may encourage criminal behavior, and therefore, society has its own way of determining the causes and punishments of crime.
