The Bronsted-Lowry theory extends the list of acid and base compounds beyond the neutral atoms and molecules.  Bronsted-Lowry theorem also states that conjugate bases and conjugate acids are also acids and bases.  The hydronium ion  H3O  (+1 charge) and the ammonium ion (NH4, +1 charge) are Bronsted-Lowry acids.  The halogen ion (Cl - , -1 charge) is a Bronsted-Lowry base.
