  • Imagine that you are moving into a new house and need to consider the home network that you will use. Outline the main considerations that you need to take into account when evaluating your networking options. Examine the major types of networks and hardware available in terms of range, speed, security, reliability, and price. Determine the network that you would implement and the hardware that you would need.

Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

Some of the different networks based on size are:

Personal area network, or PAN

Local area network, or LAN

Metropolitan area network, or MAN

Wide area network, or WAN

Main considerations when evaluating network options:

(1.) Speed on printing, connecting, data access.

(2.) Security

(3.) How much data would I want stored on a server.

(4.) Long range wireless or is short range wireless internet alright?

(5.) How many people will use my network?

(6.) Will I use the network for entertainment?

If I had a lot of family members and did business at home, I may consider using a Local area network to encompass around ten or more computers.  A PAN or personal area network is ideal for home, for sending data to printers, connecting to video game consoles, connecting to other computers to share data, but it does not do this with great speed.  If speed and privacy are important, then a LAN is suitable.

I want a wireless network too, because I want to be able to connect my smartphone to the network and browse the internet.

Speed of internet connection is important.  I want at least 100 MB/sec download speed.  Security is important so I want a WPA security encryption.  Data storage is not a big thing for me, because I do not store a huge amount of data on my computers.  I want a decent range for my wireless router.  The maximum range of wireless access would be about 50 feet.

I would only have about five people maximum using my network to access the internet, so it is not a big deal.  Yes I do use the internet for entertainment especially the network.  I connect my chromecast device with the internet and TV to watch some good shows, video clips and movies.  Therefore I personally would get a PAN, (a personal area network), because I do not have many people connecting to my network.  A LAN (local area network) is for a business or office setting where employees share data with eachother and access a main printer with speed.  I would get a Motorola Cable modem and a dLink wireless router to set up my PAN.

Please let me know if you need any clarification. I'm always happy to answer your questions.
