Your internship is an opportunity to build and enhance essential skill sets that employers are seeking such as Experiential Education Outcomes and industryspecific skills. You need to familiarize yourself with the details below in advance of starting your internship for the following reasons: 1. You'll evaluate yourself on these outcomes and skills as you complete your 3 reflection assignments and at the end of the term when you complete the Student Internship Self-Assessment Survey. 2. Your Internship Site Supervisor will evaluate you for these outcomes and skills in the Mid-Term and Final Performance Evaluations. 3. These outcomes and skill sets support the learning objectives you’re expected to achieve in this course. 4. These are the skill sets that employers are looking for in new hires! Experiential Education Outcomes & Industry-Specific Skills Students are expected to engage in self-reflection, demonstrate competency, and exhibit adaptability through the application of established experiential education outcomes in an industry setting. • Disciplinary Knowledge and Skill: Depending on your major, you will be evaluated on industry specific skills. Week 9 Intermediate Internship Assignment Part I (500-750 words) Now that you are nearly done with your internship, respond to the following prompts: 1. Describe the successes you experienced on internship, providing at least two specific examples to support your statements. Next, reflect on the skills, both interpersonal and industry-specific, that you have improved and the techniques you have learned as well as how these will affect you in making decisions going forward. Two successes I have experienced on internship are improving my speed and communication skills. I noticed that I have been much faster in completing tasks compared to when I first started on internship. For example, when placing dinner rolls on sheet trays I used to place two rolls on a tray at a time. After doing this task every day, I fell more comfortable in the routine and started placing six rolls at a time. This has allowed me to finish traying up all the dinner rolls in almost half the time as it used to take me. Although this may seem small, since I am finishing this quicker, I can move on to other tasks and help coworkers who may need an extra hand. The chefs appreciate this because their goal is to have the food prepared and moved out in the most efficient and quick manner. This internship has made me much more aware of time and the importance of keeping a schedule when working in the kitchen. My communication skills have also greatly improved since being on internship. When I first began my internship, I tended to keep to myself, but I quickly learned to speak up when I needed help or if I needed to address a problem by talking to the chef or chef assistants. I have learned to be more open and talk to a chef because not saying anything just created more boundaries in the kitchen. Everyone must be on the same page so when there are problems with any aspect of the kitchen it needs to be spoken about and addressed promptly. In addition, the staff has made me feel very welcome, and are always there to offer advice and answer questions, which has made me feel at ease. 2. Describe two or more areas you would like to improve on, providing specific examples to support your statements. Reflect on the skills, both interpersonal and industry-specific, that you would like to focus on improving and the steps you will take to achieve this. Two areas I would like to improve on are my knife skills and problem-solving skills. When working at the dessert bar I would be tasked with dicing mango and pineapple for a tapioca pudding dessert. My knife cuts were inconsistent, and it took me much longer than it should have to prep all the fruit. This resulted in wasted time and wasted product. The steps I will take to improve this skill are to practice knife cuts in my free time and time myself in order to benchmark my original speed versus improved speeds over time. Next term I would like to take a class on-campus focusing on knife skills. The second skill I would like to improve is problem-solving. Throughout this internship I have been looking to a chef assistant for an answer when something has gone wrong. While this is not necessarily a bad thing I would like to be able to handle some of the smaller situations on my own without having to go to a chef. By taking what I have already learned from the chefs on internship and from my past classes, I can be more independent and address problems as they arise on my own. I will also stop and think before I go to a chef, to make sure I have exhausted all of my knowledge and resources to come to an answer. Part II SMART Goals Based on your responses above and your thoughts on the impact your internship will have on your next steps, you will now set some relevant goals. Set at least two measureable goals you plan to achieve as a result of the learning and experience you gained on internship using the worksheets below. Consider the steps you will take to achieve these goals, any obstacles you might encounter, and resources you might need. My plan is to have this completed by Spring 2019. Now, run your response through the SMART Goals Checklist: • Is your goal Specific? Is it Measurable? A specific goal should clearly state what you want to accomplish, why it is important, how you intend to accomplish the goal and how you will know when you have achieved it. Questions to ask yourself include - What exactly do I want to achieve? How can I achieve it? How will I know I achieved it? How will I measure progress? (How many? How much?) My goal is very specific because I am focusing on this one skill. I will measure my progress by keeping a schedule and trying to practice for an hour at least three times a week. I will keep a journal to record my times. I will also take pictures each week to see how my knife skills have improved. This will be measurable by seeing decreases in my times each week while comparing the presentation of each product to be sure of its quality. I will also be able to measure my progress by the grades I will receive on assignments that are specific to knife skills. • Is it Attainable? An achievable goal should be realistic and include a plan that breaks your overall goal down into smaller, manageable steps that use the resources available to you within the timeline you have set. Questions to ask yourself include - Can this goal really happen? What action steps and/or resources will I need to take to achieve this? What obstacles might I face? This is an attainable goal if I stay committed to improving my skills. Repetition is the only way I am going to get better, so I need to stay vigilant and make time in my schedule to practice as much as possible. A resource I can use to ensure I reach my goal is to take a skills class available on campus on Fridays. An obstacle I might face is my busy schedule that may not allow me to make time to practice my knife skills. I will need to stay focused on my goal of practicing three times a week by working on my time-management skills to keep me on track. • Is it Realistic? Questions to ask yourself include – Do you have the basic knowledge and skills to reach this goal? How does the goal align with your future career plans? I have the basic knowledge and skills to reach this goal because I have had many labs where we use knife skills every day, and also I am practicing these skills in the kitchen on my internship. This goal aligns with my future career plans, which is to obtain a position as a line cook at a Michelin star rated restaurant in New York City. Without basic or even advanced knife skills, I would not be successful in any kitchen, especially a Michelin star one. • Is it Time bound? Everybody knows that deadlines are what makes most people switch to action. So set deadlines and go after them, but keep the timeline realistic and flexible. Question to ask yourself – What is the specific timeline/deadline for my goals? I would like to master this skill within a 3-month time span (no later than February 2019). This will give me enough time to perfect my skills in order to apply for a job in my field for the summer. My future SMART GOAL #2: Who: I _________________________________________________________________________ How: would like to obtain _________________________________________________________________________ What: a part-time job _________________________________________________________________________ Where: in a bakery _________________________________________________________________________ When: by March 2019 _________________________________________________________________________ Write out your completed SMART Goal #1 Statement: My goal is to obtain a part-time job in a bakery by March 2019. (How many? How much?) My goal is very specific because I need to find a part-time job in my field of study to gain more experience and exposure to the industry. I will measure my progress by keeping a record of each job I apply to, if I was able to secure an interview, and the outcome of that interview. Ultimately, securing a part-time job also means I will have reached my goal. This goal should be attainable because I have given myself three months to research and find locations in my area who are hiring. I will also prepare myself by taking advantage of career fairs on campus, as well as the resources and staff in the Experiential Education & Career Services office, to prepare me with my resume and interviewing skills. Some weeks it may get difficult because of my classwork can get overwhelming, so I will need to set time aside each day dedicated just to the job search. • Is it Realistic? Questions to ask yourself include – Do you have the basic knowledge and skills to reach this goal? How does the goal align with your future career plans? This goal is realistic because I have the basic skills in my industry from the courses and labs I have taken in school, as well as my internship experience. An entry-level position may not require advanced skills, especially because I am only a sophomore, and it is a part-time job. The skills needed to reach this goal are organization, time-management, communication and focus. • Is it Time bound? Everybody knows that deadlines are what makes most people switch to action. So set deadlines and go after them, but keep the timeline realistic and flexible. Question to ask yourself – What is the specific timeline/deadline for my goals? The deadline for this goal is March 2019, which is three months away. If I stick to my schedule and stay focused, I believe this goal can be attained.

Intermediate Internship Assignment
Part I
Now that you are nearly done with your internship, respond to the following prompts:
1. Describe the successes you experienced on internship, providing at least two specific examples to
support your statements. Next, reflect on the skills, both interpersonal and industry-specific, that you
have improved and the techniques you have learned as well as how these will affect you in making
decisions going forward.
My internship at the TPG hotels and resort in RI Cranston has had a great impact in my life and
career. As a student with hospitality & lodging major, I have been working as a revenue analyst in
the Central Revenue Management Services in TPG. During the whole internship period my daily tasks
were to run and distribute hotel revenue management reports to Area Directors of Revenue
Management, review and analyze hotel pricing in short-term booking window, update TPG trend
reports, and attend weekly revenue meetings via conference call. The two major successes that I have
experienced during the internship include developing strong skills in completing CP2 report together
with daily reports and strategic data analytics for setting strategy. During the initial days of the
internship I experienced great difficulties using the daily report and strategy report information to
update the CP2 report. However, through working and consulting the manager, I have acquired strong
skills that have enabled me to complete the CP2 report independently and move on to other tasks.
Working as a revenue analyst, I was supposed to have an economic insight, data analysis and
interpretation skills for turning data into information for presenting before stakeholders. At first, I was
poor in data analytics for strategy setting. However, through attending conference calls and Daily
Business Review (DBR) meetings, I have gained vital data analysis which has enabled me to interpret
data and set strategies for the company without having to consult. Through my participation in over
five conference calls and daily business review meetings I have learned vital skills in analyzing and
critiquing of STAR reports and forecasting revenues through strategic data analysis. The skills I have
learned enabled in to make better decisions to improve the company’s sales strategy and strategic
planning for the TPG hotels and resort.
2. Describe two or more areas you would like to improve on, providing specific examples to support
your statements. Reflect on the skills, both interpersonal and industry-specific, that you would like to
focus on improving and the steps you will take to achieve this.
The two areas that I would like to improve on are my interpersonal communication skills and
my confidence. During most of the conference calls and Daily Business Review (DBR) meetings I
realized that interpersonal communication was a challenge to me since English is not my first
language. Due to that, in most of the communications, I exhibited little confidence and that really
affected my message delivery. The steps I am going to take to improve my English language

proficiency are attending more English classes in Campus and increasing the number of English
materials that read and write. To improve my confidence I will try to engage with as many people in
conversations at the university and maintain eye contact and proper posture.
