Is your goal Specific? Is it Measurable? A specific goal should clearly state what you want to accomplish,
why it is important, how you intend to accomplish the goal and how you will know when you have achieved
it. Questions to ask yourself include - What exactly do I want to achieve? How can I achieve it? How will I
know I achieved it? How will I measure progress? (How many? How much?)
•
Is it Attainable? An achievable goal should be realistic and include a plan that breaks your overall goal
down into smaller, manageable steps that use the resources available to you within the timeline you have
set. Questions to ask yourself include - Can this goal really happen? What action steps and/or resources
will I need to take to achieve this? What obstacles might I face?
•
Is it Realistic? Questions to ask yourself include – Do you have the basic knowledge and skills to reach
this goal? How does the goal align with your future career plans?
•
Is it Time bound? Everybody knows that deadlines are what makes most people switch to action. So set
deadlines and go after them, but keep the timeline realistic and flexible. Question to ask yourself – What
is the specific timeline/deadline for my goals?

Week 9 Intermediate Internship Assignment
Part I (500-750 words)
Now that you are nearly done with your internship, respond to the following prompts:
1. Describe the successes you experienced on internship, providing at least two specific examples to support
your statements. Next, reflect on the skills, both interpersonal and industry-specific, that you have improved
and the techniques you have learned as well as how these will affect you in making decisions going forward.
Two successes I have experienced on internship are improving my speed and communication
skills. I noticed that I have been much faster in completing tasks compared to when I first started on
internship. For example, when placing dinner rolls on sheet trays I used to place two rolls on a tray at a
time. After doing this task every day, I fell more comfortable in the routine and started placing six rolls
at a time. This has allowed me to finish traying up all the dinner rolls in almost half the time as it used
to take me. Although this may seem small, since I am finishing this quicker, I can move on to other
tasks and help coworkers who may need an extra hand. The chefs appreciate this because their goal is
to have the food prepared and moved out in the most efficient and quick manner. This internship has
made me much more aware of time and the importance of keeping a schedule when working in the
kitchen. My communication skills have also greatly improved since being on internship. When I first
began my internship, I tended to keep to myself, but I quickly learned to speak up when I needed help
or if I needed to address a problem by talking to the chef or chef assistants. I have learned to be more
open and talk to a chef because not saying anything just created more boundaries in the kitchen.
Everyone must be on the same page so when there are problems with any aspect of the kitchen it needs
to be spoken about and addressed promptly. In addition, the staff has made me feel very welcome, and
are always there to offer advice and answer questions, which has made me feel at ease.
2. Describe two or more areas you would like to improve on, providing specific examples to support your
statements. Reflect on the skills, both interpersonal and industry-specific, that you would like to focus on
improving and the steps you will take to achieve this.
Two areas I would like to improve on are my knife skills and problem-solving skills. When
working at the dessert bar I would be tasked with dicing mango and pineapple for a tapioca pudding
dessert. My knife cuts were inconsistent, and it took me much longer than it should have to prep all the
fruit. This resulted in wasted time and wasted product. The steps I will take to improve this skill are to
practice knife cuts in my free time and time myself in order to benchmark my original speed versus
improved speeds over time. Next term I would like to take a class on-campus focusing on knife skills.
The second skill I would like to improve is problem-solving. Throughout this internship I have been
looking to a chef assistant for an answer when something has gone wrong. While this is not necessarily
a bad thing I would like to be able to handle some of the smaller situations on my own without having
to go to a chef. By taking what I have already learned from the chefs on internship and from my past
classes, I can be more independent and address problems as they arise on my own. I will also stop and
think before I go to a chef, to make sure I have exhausted all of my knowledge and resources to come
to an answer.
Part II SMART Goals

you will now set some relevant goals.

SMART Goals Worksheet
My future SMART GOAL #1:
Who: I
_________________________________________________________________________
How: will enhance
_________________________________________________________________________
What: my knife skills
_________________________________________________________________________
Where: through future classes and practice
_________________________________________________________________________
When: by the end of February 2019
_________________________________________________________________________
Write out your completed SMART Goal #1 Statement:
My goal is to enhance my knife skills by taking relevant classes and practicing on my own. My plan is to have this
completed by Spring 2019.
Now, run your response through the SMART Goals Checklist:
•
Is your goal Specific? Is it Measurable? A specific goal should clearly state what you want to accomplish,
why it is important, how you intend to accomplish the goal and how you will know when you have achieved
it. Questions to ask yourself include - What exactly do I want to achieve? How can I achieve it? How will I
know I achieved it? How will I measure progress? (How many? How much?)
My goal is very specific because I am focusing on this one skill. I will measure my progress by keeping a
schedule and trying to practice for an hour at least three times a week. I will keep a journal to record my
times. I will also take pictures each week to see how my knife skills have improved. This will be
measurable by seeing decreases in my times each week while comparing the presentation of each
product to be sure of its quality. I will also be able to measure my progress by the grades I will receive on
assignments that are specific to knife skills.
This is an attainable goal if I stay committed to improving my skills. Repetition is the only way I am going
to get better, so I need to stay vigilant and make time in my schedule to practice as much as possible. A
resource I can use to ensure I reach my goal is to take a skills class available on campus on Fridays. An
obstacle I might face is my busy schedule that may not allow me to make time to practice my knife skills. I
will need to stay focused on my goal of practicing three times a week by working on my time-management
skills to keep me on track.
•
Is it Realistic? Questions to ask yourself include – Do you have the basic knowledge and skills to reach
this goal? How does the goal align with your future career plans?
I have the basic knowledge and skills to reach this goal because I have had many labs where we use knife
skills every day, and also I am practicing these skills in the kitchen on my internship. This goal aligns with
my future career plans, which is to obtain a position as a line cook at a Michelin star rated restaurant in
New York City. Without basic or even advanced knife skills, I would not be successful in any kitchen,
especially a Michelin star one.
•
Is it Time bound? Everybody knows that deadlines are what makes most people switch to action. So set
deadlines and go after them, but keep the timeline realistic and flexible. Question to ask yourself – What
is the specific timeline/deadline for my goals?
I would like to master this skill within a 3-month time span (no later than February 2019). This will give me
enough time to perfect my skills in order to apply for a job in my field for the summer.
My future SMART GOAL #2:
Who: I
_________________________________________________________________________
How: would like to obtain
_________________________________________________________________________
What: a part-time job
_________________________________________________________________________
Where: in a bakery
_________________________________________________________________________
When: by March 2019
_________________________________________________________________________
Write out your completed SMART Goal #1 Statement:
My goal is to obtain a part-time job in a bakery by March 2019.
(How many? How much?)
My goal is very specific because I need to find a part-time job in my field of study to gain more experience
and exposure to the industry. I will measure my progress by keeping a record of each job I apply to, if I
was able to secure an interview, and the outcome of that interview. Ultimately, securing a part-time job
also means I will have reached my goal.
This goal should be attainable because I have given myself three months to research and find locations in
my area who are hiring. I will also prepare myself by taking advantage of career fairs on campus, as well
as the resources and staff in the Experiential Education & Career Services office, to prepare me with my
resume and interviewing skills. Some weeks it may get difficult because of my classwork can get
overwhelming, so I will need to set time aside each day dedicated just to the job search.
•
Is it Realistic? Questions to ask yourself include – Do you have the basic knowledge and skills to reach
this goal? How does the goal align with your future career plans?
This goal is realistic because I have the basic skills in my industry from the courses and labs I have taken
in school, as well as my internship experience. An entry-level position may not require advanced skills,
especially because I am only a sophomore, and it is a part-time job. The skills needed to reach this goal
are organization, time-management, communication and focus.
•
Is it Time bound? Everybody knows that deadlines are what makes most people switch to action. So set
deadlines and go after them, but keep the timeline realistic and flexible. Question to ask yourself – What
is the specific timeline/deadline for my goals?
The deadline for this goal is March 2019, which is three months away. If I stick to my schedule and stay
focused, I believe this goal can be attained.
