DESCRIPTION This assignment is the analysis of the Harvard Business School “Genzyme Center” case study via a set of predetermined questions. REQUIREMENTS You are to review the attached HBS Case Study No. 9-610-008 “Genzyme Center (A)” as follows: Genzyme managers were in the midst of designing the Genzyme Center, the company's new, Cambridge, Massachusetts-based headquarters building. To reflect Genzyme's innovativeness, progressiveness, and transparency, senior management was including many innovative green building features meant to reduce energy and water consumption and enable employees to connect with nature by working in daylight with outside views. A preliminary assessment of the interim design concluded that the building would likely qualify for a high green rating by the U.S. Green Building Council. The case study concludes with CEO Henri Termeer asking senior project manager Gordon Brailsford and director of environmental affairs Rick Mattila to propose how the building could achieve the more stringent LEED Platinum rating while being mindful that the building's design was already over budget. Based on your review and analysis of this case study, prepare a response to the following questions: 1. What are Genzyme's motivations for investing in green building practices and what is your opinion (what do you think) of them? Be specific! 2. Would you recommend that Genzyme make the additional investments to enable Genzyme Center to achieve LEED Platinum? Why or why not? 3.
