The Death Penalty
Background
One of the most notable death penalties in history is that of Giuseppe Zangara. Zangara
shot Anton Cermak after missing then president-elect Franklin Roosevelt (History). Cermak died
while being treated. Zangara was hurriedly tried and sentenced to the death penalty which was
executed two weeks after Cermak was shot. There are many changes that have happened since
these early days. Around the 1950s, public interest had built around the issue of the death
penalty. Caryl Chessman was a death row convict during this period who had managed to
postpone his execution through constant appeals. Chessman managed to do this for 12 years but
he was finally executed. During his years on appeal, he wrote and published three books which
raised awareness on the issue. Chessman was executed due to kidnapping and was among the last
people to be executed for a crime other than murder. Currently, nearly two-thirds of the entire
world has banned the death penalty. The penalty is still legal in most parts of the US. About
thirty-one states across America still have the death penalty legalized. More recently, a man was
executed in Tennessee in 2009 for murder.

hand, the people against the death penalty believe life is too valuable that even the worst of
murderers have a right to have their life preserved. This is a fact that is contradicted by the
supporters of execution who claim that life can only be repaid by the loss of another life. To
better understand the ethical value of the death penalty, we shall analyze the arguments opposing
arguments, the counterarguments and make an argument that the death penalty is an ethical way
of punishing murd...
