Question 1
Political parties are bodies that mediate between the public and the political sphere.
Political parties act as a means through which citizens can deepen their knowledge on political
and social issues making them informed voters (Sartori, 1976). Generally, political parties
purpose to win elections and focus on issues affecting the public. Political parties are different
from interest groups. An interest group comprises of people with identical ideas that influence
the public opinion. Their flexibility and strength usually depend on their size, the ability to
lobby, and the influence they have on the population. Political parties are different as compared
to the interest groups. Political parties aim at achieving power through supporting candidates and
winning elections while interest groups promote their views or positions on specific issues
(Sartori, 1976). Interest groups are not involved in elections or have candidates running for
office. Political parties are flexible since they maximize the support from the public and use that
to win elections. Conversely, interest groups are not flexible since they can only focus on one
issue (environmental protection) to promote their ideas trying to unite people. Political parties
focus on different issues such as education, taxes, and migration. The members usually have
different views on such issues through still encompassed in the same umbrella. Conversely,
interest groups focus on one issue with their members sharing the same views. In regards to size,
the sizes of political parties do not affect their chances of winning elections. Conversely, the size
of an interest group affects how the group can gain influence and promotes its views.
Political parties develop policies and persuade voters to elect their candidates to office.
They represent the interests of the public, simplify choices, and make policies. Political parties
represent individuals as well as groups. Once candidates have been elected to office, they air out
the concerns of their constituent and their political parties for consideration. Political parties also
