What Is Gained By Studying The History Of Psychology?

Studying the history of psychology provides insight into how ideas have evolved,
showing how an old idea became new again. Through the study of the history and systems of
psychology, scholars can avoid repeating the mistakes of the past, helping understand the discipline
in newer measures and understanding the assumptions that contemporary psychological theories are
based on (King, Woody, & Viney, 2015). The history of psychology is characterized by misreading
and misunderstanding. For instance, a psychological theory might be true or not, but understanding
the school or thought which influenced that theory and how the theory deviated from the system is
crucial. Notably, psychology began when people started questioning themselves. Until the 19th
century, there were various models and theories based on philosophy, until the aspect of science was
introduced and hence the formal psychology discipline (King, Woody, & Viney, 2015). Thus, the
past of psychology, in addition to various differences of opinions, are credited for the heterogeneous
discipline of psychology known today. Psychology is a diverse discipline and the objective of
studying its history is to help alleviate confusion based on its diversity, and helping scholars

environment for study, and understanding how contemporary psychology has development makes it
more richer, offering perspective. Through the study of the history of psychology, scholars identify
the fundamental cultural and political occurrences in how psychology evolved to the present
discipline.

contributing to the fields of psychology. On the other hand, some psychologists study aspects of the
