LEADERSHIP ROLE IN GROUP WORK ASSIGNMENTS

2

Introduction
Group work has been praised but also vilified for its successes and limitations
respectively. Supporters of group work state that group work allows students to tackle more
complex ideas which they cannot due on their own. Secondly, it enhances innovation as different
people will often have different perspectives on how to approach any topic. It can also encourage
other people to be more involved if they receive appropriate support, motivation, and
encouragement from their peers. Group work also allows for bonding of group members which
also builds more cohesion in the overall classroom (Carnegie Mellon University, n.d.).
Similarly, group work enables people to be more responsible especially when they have to
contribute an equal part as an individual which then is used to make or finish the entire group’s
work.
However anti-group work supporters believe this system has been overused and does not
produce the many benefits that have been proposed. An article by The Guardian is quoted as
saying that group work often stifles good ideas rather than promoting them (Welham, 2014).
Critics of group work state that working in a group is almost impossible especially when
everyone has a different opinion. Similarly, group work often tends to be dominated by some
members while others are often left out, their ideas never to be considered. Thirdly, members in
the group often have to be pushed to give their all to a project and a member can bring their
entire team down if they fail to participate fully. Group members will often feel like they have
been put in the worst possible group and rarely are group members content with the members
assigned to them.

corrected through appropriate group leadership. Leadership is important in addressing all the
barriers that occur in a group setting. This includes the encoding and decoding communication
states of communication. Group members will often have difficulty coming together in these
stages. In the encoding stage, group members may often find it difficult to properly communicate
information to the rest of the group. This may arise from the unfamiliarity between themselves
and the rest of the group (Ragala, 2017). Similarly, a member could lack the basic
communication skills needed such as not having the appropriate words to effectively convey an
idea. Other negative issues can include emotional conflict where the emotions of anger can arise
in groups which prevent a sender from effectively passing on their message.
For the encoding stage, a member with the right leadership skills can sort out such issues
easily. This involves ensuring that all group members respect them as the member to drive the
direction of the group. With this in mind, a leader can determine who should be the sender in the
encoding stage. The leader can also be supportive by helping the sender appropriately convey
