Leadership involves the ability or activity whereby leaders directly or indirectly affect and
guide their followers, which is usually in a bid to achieve certain goals and objectives under
specific conditions (Moonen, 2019). There are different types of leadership such as
transformational, Empowering, Servant and Transactional leadership.
Servant Leadership
This is a type of leadership where the main purpose of the leader is to serve. The main
focus of the leader, in this case, does not primarily involve benefiting the organization or company
but serving others. The leadership type has its roots from Robert K. Greenleaf. This leadership
style depends mostly on how the leader, who is the servant, behaves. The leader is expected to
share power, put the needs of the people first and help them perform better than they currently
perform. In this type of leadership, the traditional norm is averted. Instead of people working to
serve their leaders, the opposite happens. According to Robert K. Greenleaf who is the founder of
this type of leadership, servant leadership should be focused and ensure that those served to grow
as people. The leaders should also ensure that the followers become autonomous, free, healthier
and that they can themselves become servant leaders too. The leader will acknowledge other
peoples' perspectives to boost their work as well as their personal goals, engage them in decision
making where appropriate and hence build a stronger community within the team. By doing so,
higher trust, engagement, and teamwork can be realized. Innovation within places of work can also
improve due to this type of leadership (Liden., 2015).
Servant leadership benefits both leaders and servants. In this case, the employees gain
personal growth as the organization grows due to increased employee commitment and
