How Solar Conversion Works
Solar radiation from the sun is in form of packets of energy called photons that hit the
surface of a solar panel. On hitting the solar panels, electrons are knocked off from their atoms.
Conductors attached to the positive and negative sides of the solar panel cells create an electric
circuit and current flows. Since the cells in a solar panel are arranged in such a way that the
current is multiplied, the total power in a solar panel equals the power produced in each cell
multiplied by the total number of solar pane cells. Solar panels are made of photovoltaic (PV)
solar cells made of silicon constructed onto a positive and negative layers.
However, solar panels generate Direct Current (D.C); hence, current flows in one
direction only. To convert the D.C to Alternating Current (AC) that can flow in either direction
(reversed), a solar inverter is required. Apart from converting the DC to AC, solar inverters also
offer ground fault shield. Solar inverters have provisions for connection to the battery which
stores charge that can be converted to DC in case of extremely low radiation.
How to calculate electricity produced by a solar panel
Since a solar panel collects solar radiation from the sun as a source of energy, the amount
of electricity that the solar panel produced is depends on the solar radiation (solar irradiation)
that hits the solar panel which depends on geographical area; the size of the solar panel (area of
the solar panel), and the conversion efficiency of solar cells (Chandel, Naik, & Chandel, 2015).
The power generated by a PV array is given by the following formula.
