Don’t forget to put your name and I.D. number at the top of this page! Project 3 is worth 50 points. It is worth 12 percent of your course grade. For this project, you will choose one option. A rubric is provided so you know how you will be graded and what is required. Please look over the rubric as well as reading the comments it provides. Also, review the appendix in this course for more about writing essays, thesis statements, paragraphs, MLA style, and conventions. Cultural Analysis In this project, you will examine the impact of cultural values and situations upon literature. You will select one of the four questions. Whatever question you choose, develop a clear thesis and support your position with examples from the text. Discuss the cultural issues in the work(s). Summarize the positive and negative cultural impacts of the events described in the works. Option 1 Compare a work from one of the World War I poets (Rupert Brooke, Siegfried Sassoon, or Wilfred Owen) to Winston Churchill’s “Wartime Speech.” Based on these two works, do you think attitudes in Britain changed between the time in which the poem was written and the time in which Churchill gave his speech? If so, how? What changed? Why did these changes occur? Option 2 In “Shooting and Elephant,” Orwell’s opinion about imperialism is that “when the white man turns tyrant, it is his own freedom that he destroys.” What does he mean by this statement? What was the English reason for colonizing in the first place? How does Orwell’s experience in Burma prove his opinion? Use examples from the story. Option 3 Compare and contrast the effects of imperialism upon the indigenous characters in “No Witchcraft for Sale” and in “B. Wordsworth.” Consider the countries that are described in each story. How were the characters treated similarly? How were they treated differently? To what extent were the effects of imperialism internalized by the characters? Project 3 1 ENGH 044 Option 4 In what ways does Omeros reflect modernism? Re-read the section in your textbook that discusses modernism (pages 1131–1132) and use quotations from the poem to defend your thoughts. Emphasize the cultural situations of the characters. You may do your project as an essay, a slideshow presentation (Power Point or Prezi), or a website.  If you choose the essay option, it should be 1,200 words in length.  If you do the slideshow, it should include at least 20 slides in which you address all aspects of the question you are answering. You should present a clear thesis / argument and support it with well-organized ideas. Headings should be easy to identify, and all text, including bulleted lists, should be easy to read. You may be creative in how you set up your slides, but each slide should contribute an idea to your presentation and none should appear cluttered.  If you do the website option, you should address all aspects of the question you are answering.
