Jean-Honoré Fragonard, The Swing, 1767, oil on canvas (Wallace Collection, London)
Also known as the Happy Accidents of the Swing, the Swig is an 18th-century oil on
canvas painting made by Jean-Honore Fragonard. Fragonard made the painting back in 1767 at a
time when the Rococo Art Movement was at its peak. The movement came at a time when artists
were shifting away from Grand Manner and the Classicism which had governed the preceding

London. The Swing is one of the masterpieces made during the Rococo era and is the most
famous work from Fragonard.

at the centre of the composition. She is on a swing, and a man is pushing her from behind with a
smile. On the left side, another man is looking up at the girl’s skirt as she moves through the air.
As the woman swings high, she throws her left shoe, and it can be seen flying in the air. There
are also two statues one of a Putto above the young man, on the left side. The putto has its one
figure in the mouth as a sign of silence. ...
