Volunteer at the Salvation Army
Abstract
This term paper is about my experience as a volunteer at the Salvation Army. It contains
examples of the situation that I went through during volunteering. It also includes information
about the agency and what mission the agency has in place. I have interviewed with the director
of the Salvation Army, and I am writing in this paper some of our conversation and the topics we
went through together. I am also writing about approaches that are mostly used in the agency
according to my experience there. Volunteering does not require an individual to become
selective but ready to work or help in any situation. Volunteers in most cases prove their ability
in conditions unfavorable to humans. Therefore, the paper will analyze the benefits and
challenges of volunteering.
Agency and mission
The Salvation Army is an international movement. It is an evangelical part of the
Christian church. The message is based on the Bible; its ministry is motivated by the love of
God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name
without discrimination. Then William Booth started the Salvation Army in England in 1865.
Target population
The Salvation Army part of the ministry team here for the Salvation Army El Cajon
Corps. They help in reaching out to bring their mission into the community whether it is through
Sunday church, youth programs, fundraising, and a social service office. Salvation Army is
overseeing the social service office, which we call family services. In their family service office,
they are primarily a food pantry where we help low-income families or families facing an

emergency by providing free emergency groceries. They also help with referrals for other needs
such as drug and alcohol problems, shelter, clothing, etc. (Hill, 2017). They oversee food rescue,
food drives, and partnerships with San Diego Food Bank and Feeding San Diego. They are also a
part of the East County Homeless Task Force where we partner with our community to help
bring solutions to homelessness here in East County San Diego.
