The number of individuals a manager can direct effectively and efficiently depends on
the hierarchical organizational structure. According to experts with traditional perspectives, in
management circles, the number of individuals a manager can direct efficiently is seven plus or
minus two. Modern organizational experts, however, argue that a manager should be in an
excellent position to effectively and efficiently lead a team of 15-20 individuals (Gupta, 2010).
Nonetheless, the number of individual to manager ratio depends on factors such as the size of the
organization, nature of the job, the nature of the organization, skills, and competencies of a
manager and individuals' skills and abilities.
It is critical for managers to direct a smaller group of individuals so that the manager can
