Introduction

The rapid growth and expansion of the churches in the middle age was facilitated by a
number of factors and has become a perennial source of fascination to most of the
contemporary researchers.

The exploration of religion and its advancements from a

sociological perspective as explored by Rodney Stark reveals four intuitive factors that shifted
the rate at which classical paganism and different aspects of religion were spread and adopted
in the western civilization era under different circumstances. Some of the factors that facilitated
the expansion and growth of the early Christian churches in the middle age included aspects
such as the existence of social networks, existence of works of compassion in the society such
as caring for the sick, the widows and the orphans in the society, the position of the society on
issues such as adultery, abortion and infanticide which were viewed in the context of ethics
and morality in the society and the theology of love which existed in the society since time
memorial. These factors are explained in details under the following subheadings.
Social networks

Most of the religions in the middle ages grew as a result of the existence of stable social
networks. These played a significant role in determining the interpersonal relationships among
people and the created a direct structure through which different people were attached. 2Most
of the previous research works on the spread and expansion of religions show that attachments
and personal relationships among people facilitated their interactions and this defined to a great
extent, the reasons why some churches were established in some regions and they developed
