What are the differences between elastic and inelastic collisions. And what is an easy way to tell them apart.

My physics teacher referred to elastic collisions as "boing" because the objects bounced off each other like billiard balls.

He referred to inelastic collisions as "splat" collisions because deformation caused shapes to change like when cars crash.

Elastic collisions preserve momentum and kinetic energy. Inelastic collisions convert kinetic energy to energy of deformation.
