Literature is characterized by several different eras, right from the beginning of time.
These eras are symbolized by their unique themes and the historical contexts that defined them.
Out of the ten divisions that English literature has, the Romantic, Victorian age and the Modern
era make up three of four most recent classifications. This article will seek to explain the themes
that made up each of these eras in literature.
The romantic period refers to a period where the modern mass media as we know it today
began to take shape (White, 2013). Being a period immediately following the age of
reason/enlightment, it was an era of wealth, stability and the people having a sense of progress
due to the practicality of the preceding era. The differences from the age of reason was that this
was an age of emotions rather than rationality with there being plenty of idealists and dreamers
in literature. The increased standards of living led to the establishment of such values such as
individualism and imagination. Individuals would associate the nature with the inner soul
whereby nature was considered to evoke a sense of peace and tranquility. Despite this era having
passed, some of the values are still present today heroic individualism which can be expounded
to mean the individual separate from the masses (White, 2013).
For each era, there are elements in history that contributed to its themes. For the romantic
era, the main one is the industrialization and urbanization of people due to an increase in literacy
