Gender Politics-Naomi Alderman’s The power
The Power is an inspiring novel and all time favorite literature piece of work written by
winner of the Bailerys Women’ prize for Fiction (Naomi Alderman). The entire writing is
beautiful and this is anchored on the high level of intelligence and prowess in using literary
techniques such as symbolism, imagery and similes to communicate the message to the target
audience. The theme of gender politics is centered on a number of characters such as the Kristen,
Margot and rich Nigerian boy lounging in a family pool. The boy’s parents are hypocrites since
they try to hide their true colors as opposed to being real Christians. As fate would have it, a vital
force comes in and everything becomes devastating. It is evident that all teenage girls do have
immense power and they can cause chronic pain or even death to those perceived to be a barrier
to their rightful place in society. The theme of gender politics takes central part of the novel and
it stands out that women are corrupted by power just like men.

The question of power associated with corruption is the core theme addressed by Naomi.
It is evident that men have been the ruling class for a long period of time . This is manifested in
the manner in which women have been treated as second class people in society. It is evident
how women and young girls have been branded dehumanizing titles such as objects that can be

used and destroyed by a man at any time and per his will. Male chauvinism is what fuels gender
politics. They have developed a fossilized negative sense of superiority towards women; despite
the fact that only gender is what makes the two different. Gender politics is what creates social
inequality in society. To make this point clear, Naomi uses a number of stylistics devices such as
imagery-she is surprised with scenes of male soldiers, crime gangs and male police officers
(Alderman, 02).
According to The Power, women and young girls do discover that they have unique
physical and electrical power that can be awakened in their bodies. It is this high voltage inbuilt
energy that improves their level of confidence and this creates an enabling environment for
