Luis Perez de Guzman Humberto Perez Writing About Literature Synthesis Essay The following is a synthesis essay of the story, “From Beyond” by H.P. Lovecraft (Lovecraft, 2014). The story is told of the experiences of an unnamed narrator with a scientist who goes by the name Crawford Tillinghast. The scientist is responsible for the creation of an electronic device that helps people perceive foreign planes of existence. The machine emits resonance waves that bring about the perception of these planes that are not customary to he accepted reality. Continued contact with this scientist makes the narrator aware of an alien environment that overlaps our own. What he sees is a series of horrific and strange hordes of unimaginable creatures. Later we see the revelation of Tillinghast that he also used the device to move some of his house servants into the plane being observed by our narrator as he also allows the creatures to perceive the human world. The drama hits when we realize that the servants were killed by the alien creatures. The climax of the story peaks when the scientist tells the narrator that one of such creatures is right behind him; scared he picks up a gun and shoots at the device ruining its functionality. Immediately after, Tillinghast does out of apoplexy. Investigations later revealed that the scientist murdered his servants in spite (Lovecraft, 2014). The story dives into the world of extraterrestrial, supernatural and pre-human elements whose combination refines this style of storytelling. The story “From Beyond” brings meaning from a perspective of horror and gothic. Lovecraft (2014) presents the dangers of peering into the bottom of creation through the actions of Crawford Tillinghast who is baffled by how feeble human sense can be. In a quest to prove human rudimentary or atrophied senses he builds an electronic device that unearths horrors from beyond. The story speaks a lot to those of us who dream of contemporary occult practices (Lovecraft, 2014). These imaginations by Lovecraft (2014) bring us closer to alien contact and the unlocking of human strange senses beyond the ordinary. Strange as it is, this feat allows us to appreciate the possibilities of our universe and learn how to process the unknown that some may fear by giving meaning to it. This is a bizarre phenomenon however because Lovecraft himself was a rationalist who was not known to embrace the occult practices yet he ended up creating a universe for the lovers of these practices (Engle, 2014). The power of any good writer is embedded in the amount of inspiration his or her pieces carry. Lovecraft has been known for his broad mythos and the magnitude of expansion that his world of cosmic and mythical horror fictions have grown to. As a result, his idiosyncratic style has inspired so many writers who took over from him and joined in the rich tapestry of creation which has resulted in a pantheon of deities from a myriad of authors (Engle, 2014). These inspirations are what add to the world of the mythos fanatics, those who find weird fiction heaven to pour out their souls and lay down the troubles of the day. The same power has been expressed by the Lovecraftian occult practitioners. Despite the constant rejection of the mythical world and practices as well as any attachment to occult practices by Lovecraft himself, these occult practitioners still find it hard to let go of this attachment. These people have managed to find a strong attachment and a magical esoteric significance in the creation of Lovecraft. These beliefs and practices to the Lovecraft adherents though strange and cringe-inducing at times, they still represent the power of the fiction by Lovecraft, (2014) that has represented a huge essence of identity to these mythic believers. In conclusion, what still remains ultimately to be seen is that as profoundly and unlikely as cults of Lovecraft are, someday their followers and believers will succeed to find the opening that leads to the dimensions beyond our reality that they so vividly seek (Engle, 2014).
