Description

The final assignment for this course is to produce an annotated bibliography. You should gather 6-8 original sources that directly relate to the research question you are investigating (Due May 1) and produce a short annotation for each source (see below). Your sources may include historical documents, manifestos, literary texts, scholarly articles, book-length studies, personal interviews, biographies and/or autobiographies, audio recordings, or other visual materials (film, posters, television clips, paintings, photographs).

Please note: while the films and texts we have studied this semester will more than likely inform your investigation, they do not count as original sources for this assignment.

For each source you should provide the following four pieces of information: citation, annotation, assessment, most important thing you learned/new question.

1 Full Citation (MLA Style)

FILM

List films by their title. Include the name of the director, the film studio or distributor, and the release year.

BOOK

Last, First. Book. [Translator] City: Publisher, Year Published. Print

SCHOLARLY ARTICLE

Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Journal, Volume, Issue, Year, pages.

IMAGE (PAINTING OR PHOTOGRAPH)

Provide the artist's name (if applicable), the work of art italicized, the date of creation, the institution and city where the work is housed. Follow this initial entry with the name of the Website in italics, and the date of access.

SONG

Provide the artist’s name (or band), the title of the song, the album, record label, and date

For other sources see MLA Formatting and Style Guide https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01...

2 Annotation (1-2 paragraphs)

For books and articles please include the main argument or idea expressed by the source, including two quotationsfrom the source that you found particularly insightful, thought-provoking, or perhaps controversial. For all other sources (songs, visual materials, etc.) please include a detailed description. Be sure to include the historical context for the source as well: when was it published/created? Is there any significant information to include about the author, artist, event or movement?

3 Assessment (1 paragraph)

Provide a brief statement about how the source relates to your research question as well as an assessment of its overall significance for your research topic. What did you learn from this source? Were there any problems or limitations with this source? You might also consider the type of source you are using and reflect on its field of impact and potential audiences. Is it a scholarly source (journal article, book-length study)? an artistic work (painting, song, video)? a blog or website? an important historical document? a manifesto? a visual document (film or photograph)? a work of philosophy or critical theory? What do these different types of sources add to your research?

4 What you learned/New Question(s)? (1-2 paragraphs)

Finally, provide a brief reflection on how your encounter with the source deepened (or complicated) your investigation of the “queer past”. Did reading/viewing/listening to this source change your initial question? Did it take you in a new direction you weren’t expecting? How would you reformulate your question based on what you learned from this source?

Yulei Lin LGBT 145 Research Question The research will focus on the development of same sex marriage legislation, and investigate the various factors that drive the movement forward. What are some of the obstacles faced by activists? What are the defining moments of the movement that eventually led to success? The issue of same-sex marriage is a sensitive political topic, one that often divides people ideologically. Does legislative progress have positive influence on the public opinion of gay marriage? From Stonewall Riot in 1970 to the milestone Supreme Court case that legalized same sex marriage in 2015, the general political and legislative trend is a growing acceptance of gay marriage, but how much has public opinion changed? How has it been impacted by the gradual endorsement of legislations?

Woodford, M. R. (2010). Same-Sex Marriage and Beyond. Journal of Gay & Lesbian Social
Services, 22(1-2), 1–8. doi:10.1080/10538720903332131
In this article, Woodford covers the journey towards the legalization of same-sex
marriage, prior to its legalization by the recent Supreme Court decision. Throughout the text, the
author recalls the different obstacles that were placed in the path towards legalization. The
authors cover the ways in which alliances were built to push forth the agenda towards
legalization. The author presents, as well, some of the public issues that were faced at the time,
particularly focused on the public perception of the legislation that sought to favor the LGBT
groups at the time.
For my essay, this article can be important because it covers some of the past issues that
were faced by LGBT groups on the path of legalization. It provides specific feedback about past
interactions so that one can compare them to the obstacles faced today. Furthermore, the article
also includes data about past public perception, which can also be compared with more current
data. Finally, there article also includes important information about the ways in which policy
was enacted, or proposed, in challenge to this norm.
One particular thing that I learned from this article was the concept of the heterosexual
assumption. This concept describes the underlying social predetermination to assume that all
individuals must be involved in a heterosexual relationship. Under this assumption, all
relationships that deviate from this norm are prevented from reaching the same rights as those
who do fit in the heterosexual norm. Furthermore, it molds the perceptions of the heterosexual
majority, creating a division between the default – heterosexuality – and the other – same-gender
attracted individuals.
