Introduction
Regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies have key differences and their respective
impacts on quality and safety also differ significantly. Regulation involves rules that must be
adhered with to ensure quality and safety and regulatory agencies implement and enforce these
rules. While accreditation involves certifying as a seal of approval that a specific individual or
organization has met the required set standards, accrediting bodies implement and assess the set
standards and ensure there is compliance. Regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies are very

paper will discuss one regulatory agency, its history, reasons of existence, its reporting, how the
agency operates, and its impact on quality at each level of health care. The selected regulatory
