A. Goal Setting
1. My goals
According to Pat Sweet in the article, What is the Goal of an Engineer? (Part 1), an
individual cannot be productive or successful unless they have set down the goals they want to
achieve at the end of it all (Sweet, 2013). It is in line with what Richard Landis states in chapter
one of his book Studying Engineering: A Roadmap to a Rewarding Career (Landis, 2013). Since
I do not want to be in the group of failures in my career, I have come up with goals.
a.

My short term goals
i.

To acquire civil engineering skills and knowledge that will enable me to find
ways to solve predicaments in my field efficiently and effectively and to keep
people safe.

ii.

To graduate at the top of my civil engineering class strictly four years from now.

b. My intermediate goal
i.

To secure an internship opportunity in one of the leading civil engineering firms
and maybe later on a secure job opportunity in the same firm.

c.

My long term goals
i.

To come up with my civil engineering firm where I can provide services to
people, and I also cannot deny that I am also looking forward to the financial
benefits that I will reap as an engineer.

2. Strengthening commitment to my above goals
Still, in chapter one of the above stated Richard Landis’s book, he recommends some of the
ways that an individual can strengthen their goals, and it is something I will follow to the letter.
To strengthen the commitment of my short term goals I will have to attend all the classes,
promptly do my homework, actively participate in class discussions and have a close relationship
with my tutors and mentors.
To strengthen my intermediate goal, I will start looking into top civil engineering firms in the
continent and also work hard to ensure that I get the grades that will enable me to secure both the
internship and job opportunities easily.

Lastly, to strengthen my longterm goals, I will have to be resilient and be fully committed to
my course and one of the ways I can do that as a student is by working very hard.
3. My Four-year roadmap
According to Carnegie and colleagues, goals without a plan are w...
