Description

Argumentation Challenging the Single Story Introduction It is our human nature to stereotype, to assume, to make generalizations, and to oversimplify. Often, we make judgements about others, others who may not be like us, creating what Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Adichie calls a single story of someone. According to Adichie, we create a single story when we “show a people as one thing, as only one thing, over and over again, and that is what they become.” In her TED talk, “The Danger of a Single Story,” Adichie warns that if we hear only that single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding. This paper will seek to confront and challenge the idea of single story. Your task will be to think of a single story that has perpetrated your life (the single story of Iraqi refugees, or that of Mexican immigrants, or that of teenage mothers, or African American males, or community college students, or any other). While a single story of any of these exists, we know that there is more to it than that. Like Adichie warns, these single stories have been told over and over again, but it is now time for us to break them apart, to look closely at what is being missed, to learn (like Adichie did) the complexities within the story. To do so, you will trace the single story’s origins and its spread into the mainstream with the purpose of showing your readers what the mainstream leaves out, what more is there to know, what else is true. Understanding the complexity of single stories is essential to effectively operating in our diverse world.

The Single Story of College Students

Introduction
Most people who end up going to college do so because they have been told it is the right
option but not because they know it is or they are under pressure to do so. There is an increase in
colleges in the society which also leads to more people wanting to attend colleges. However, it is
crucial to evaluate if it is the right option for everyone. The single-sided story has resulted in
students believing that the only way to make it in life is to go to college.
Origin and Confirmation of the Single Story
Parents play a significant part when it comes to one-sided college student education. When
most of the parents are posed with the question of how they want their children lived to be it usually
includes a college education. This means that they will bring up their children telling them how
important college education is. Since the student has grown up hearing about it, there is no other
truth they know. Other things like skills like arts are generally seen as something that can be
pursued part-time and not a substitute for a college education.
Schools and teachers are an excellent example of those who confirm in the single story of
community college. In fact, in the last year of high school students spend most of their time sending
the application to top colleges and also going to visit them. The college has become the norm, and
those who do not attend are seen to be out of place.

Something else that has led to the single-sided story is that there is a misconception that
white collar jobs are the only way of successful career life and life in general. This could not be
furthest from the truth. Children are brought up been groomed to be doctors and lawyers among
others. To attain the education that is needed for this profession, one does have to achieve higher
education. This has resulted in most of the students wanting to get a college education (Bennett,
2013).
