ENG 101 Assignment #8: Essay #2: “My Time” Reread “Our Time” by John Edgar Wideman with the below assignment in mind. Mark any sections that stand out to you now as important to a complex understanding of Robby that you had not already thought about or noted. Make double-entry notes using these sections. Here is what John Edgar Wideman says about his investigation of Robby’s crime in an earlier section of Brothers and Keepers, the book from which the chapter “Our Time” is taken from: You never know exactly when something begins. The more you delve and backtrack and think, the more clear it becomes that nothing has a discrete, independent history; people and events take shape not in orderly, chronological sequence but in relation to other forces and events, tangled skeins of necessity and interdependence and chance that after all produce only one result: what is. (19) We have now worked our way through “Our Time” once—understanding, interpreting and prioritizing the many causes offered for Robby’s problems from three perspectives: John’s, Robby’s and Mrs. Wideman’s. Many of you have already observed in your homework and in class discussion that there is not just one cause to Robby’s decline. From the above quotation, it is clear that John Edgar Wideman agrees. But even if most of you think the causes are multiple and that the issue is complex, there is no clear agreement on which causes are more important than others and how the causes you think are important relate to each other. This is the work of your paper. And so, if you don’t mind the pun, you should think of this paper as “My Time.” It is your time to put forward your best understanding of the causes of Robby’s decline. To do this, you need to select, arrange, and discuss the details of Robby’s life that you think link together to form the best explanation of Robby’s problems. This is NOT the same thing as a summary of the chapter because you need to say which causes and which perspectives YOU think are most important and why. You need to work with and against the grain of Wideman’s text to form your perspective. This paper should be 4 pages. You should aim for a complex argument based on multiple, linked causes. In other words, I am asking for you to compose a strong reading of “Our Time.” A strong reading will work with the text specifically, using details and quotations to answer this question: Of all the reasons that John, Robby and Mrs. Wideman bring forward to explain Robby’s decline into crime, which set of causes emerge for you as most important and why? Do not use or consult outside sources. You only need your Homework Assignments and “Our Time” by John Edgar Wideman. 25 points:  Include all drafts of Essay #2 (Assignment #8). Include the homework assignments that led to essay #3 (Assignments #5, #6, and #7). Include this sheet with your final draft.  Participate in drafting and revising in a timely manner. Hand in drafts and final revision on time.  Follow academic standards for formatting: typed, double-spaced and in Times New Roman font size 12. The margins must be 1.25” on each side. DO NOT include a title page. INCLUDE the following on the left side upper corner (each entry one line): Your Name, Course Number and Section, Prof. Earley, Assignment, date. STAPLE everything together (or use a clip). Follow academic standards for documenting and citing your sources. For example, when you begin talking about a source, introduce the full name and the title of the reading. Thereafter, just include page number in parenthesis, or last name and page number if you do not include the author’s name in the signal phrase: (778) or (Wideman 778).  Include a Works Cited page with the citation for “Our Time” by John Edgar Wideman. You can find how to do this online at the Purdue Writing Lab (https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/purdue_owl.html)  Print and Proofread BEFORE you hand it in. Your revision will not be perfect, but I expect you to correct what you can in terms of grammar, punctuation, formatting errors, and avoidable typos. I do not want sloppy work. 75 points:  Include the COVER LETTER FOR ESSAY#2. It must fulfill the requirements (See handout with Instructions). (15 points)  Have a clear main point for the essay which answers the question: Of all the reasons that John, Robby and Mrs. Wideman bring forward to explain Robby’s decline into crime, which set of causes are most important according to you and why? Select, arrange, and discuss the details of Robby’s life that you think link together to form the best explanation of Robby’s problems. (15 points)  Support your main point throughout the essay. Organize your essay and argument following a logical order. Paragraphs need to have the purpose of supporting the main point for the essay. Develop each paragraph with a controlling idea, logical reasoning and explanations, examples, and supporting evidence. Follow the MEAL plan (from handout). (15 points)  Include at least 5 direct quotes from the text. Set the context for the quote. Connect the quotes to your point. Analyze the significance of the quote in relation to your point (refer to the handout on using direct quotes effectively). (15 points)  Make substantial conceptual changes (rather than just lexical changes) during the revision process (we’ll discuss what this means in class, so do not miss class on revision days). This can include (but it is not limited to) adding details, adding evidence, using different evidence, adding examples, using different examples, expanding on an idea, introducing a new idea, deleting parts, changing focus, rethinking a point. (15 points) Your first draft of this essay is due on Thursday, March 28th. A second draft is due on Tuesday, April 2nd. The final draft of this essay is due on Tuesday, April 9th.

“Our Time”,
In “Our Time”, John Edgar Wideman presents a story of a family and
generation consumed by the ills of a society. In the story, the society is blinded by the
forces of racial segregation, and time seem to pretty much provide a breeding ground
for further inflation of these conditions. Wideman, through the life of his younger
brother Robby, depicts how problems associated with urbanization can affect the
characteristics of individuals and condemn them into a world of crime. Robby’s
decline into crime is a good example of how urbanization problems such as poverty,
lack of proper shelter and the basic necessities of life can lead one into crime.
The environment in which Robby was brought up in made him decline even
further. For example, he grew up in a society where black people were not considered
human beings. Wideman observes that “a dead nigga ain’t really such a big mistake
when you think about it,” that a black man can easily end up “killing some innocent
person or wasting another nigga,” (Wideman 757). This is racism in a society and it is
dangerous since young people are profiled and stereotyped as criminals. Thus, Robby
grew up in a society where black people were regarded as nothing more of criminals.
In an almost all-white neighborhood, the black people were like ...
