This week you will take a digital field trip to view the Ancient Greece Architecture Gallery at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Located in New York, the Met offers one of the United States' most diverse and largest collections of art in the world. Your visit to the digital archive will help you develop your understanding of ancient Greek architectural forms, and provide key details about the contexts that these forms emerged from.

Ancient Greco-Roman Architecture
The Greco-Roman architecture is one of the most impressive ancient structural designs,
and there are plenty of their galleries at the Ney York museum. The ancient building is one
which is still frequently visited to date because it is one of the few structures that have endured
thousands of years. An example of such a structure is the Coliseum. It is an oval shape
amphitheater found in Rome, Italy, and makes one of the most significant architecture of the
Romans (Sayre, 2013). The Coliseum was the Roman Empire’s biggest amphitheater, standing at
a height of 159 feet, length of 615 feet and a width of 510 feet. It had an estimated capacity of
50,000 people who could enter through its seventy-six value arcades (Sayre, 2013). The top of
this building is designed with ropes and pulleys which shade its occupants.
The Coliseum is a freestanding ancient building made of concrete and stones, and it has a
distinctive exterior that has three stories of domed entrances supported by semi-circular columns.
Every story has a column with varied styles. There is ornate Corinthian order of columns at the
top, the middle has ionic, and the bottom has Doric order. There is an Arch of Corinthian, which
was built in 315 AD in honor and remembrance of victory of Constantine I over the Maxentius.
