Topic: Respiratory Issues Complicated by Economic Disadvantage

A mother brings her 8-year-old child to the clinic, stating the child “just isn’t breathing right, doesn’t want to play, just lies on the couch — this happens all the time.”

The appearance of both mother and child is disheveled. The child’s wheezing can be heard across the room. When asked if the child is better at any certain time of the day, the mother responds, “It’s like this all the time and has been for the past year — we saw a doctor last year who diagnosed asthma but we don’t have any money for drugs or to come back to the clinic.”

  • Identify the resources currently available in your state to support this family in the care of this child, including assistance programs for costs of health care follow-up and pharmaceutical treatment agents.
  • Create a communication plan for mother and child for both prescriptive and non-prescriptive drug therapies.

Introduction
Respiratory complications have become a major health concern worldwide especially
among the children below the age of five years. Asthma is the most common respiratory
complications that have risen attention across countries. However, in most countries, Asthma
cases are not considered as a healthcare priority due to economic challenges. Economic
disadvantages have made it difficult for patients to access healthcare facilities and afford
medications due to inadequate financial capability. Therefore, it is important for the relevant
authorities to develop strategies to control and prevent this chronic disease. This paper will
analyze a case study of a child suffering from Asthma and how economic challenges have led to
the delay for the treatment.
Diagnosis and Pathophysiology of Asthma
The diagnosis for Asthma is dependent on several factors which include medical history,
a series of the physical exam, the patient's symptoms and overall health tests and results. One of
the common signs of Asthma diagnosed in the child is his high-pitched wheezing that could be
heard from the next room. The medical history also suggested with a higher probability that the
child was suffering from Asthmatic conditions since his mother stated that the child's conditions
had persisted for more than a year. Other questions that could be asked to find out whether the
respiratory complications are associated with the diagnosis of Asthma. Spirometry is one of the
main medical tests that the doctor may carry out to diagnose Asthma in children of the age above
five years ("Asthma: pathophysiology, causes, and diagnosis," 2014). This test involves the
testing of pulmonary functioning of the patient.
