California has been practicing capital punishment for people with grave offenses, just like
other states that have statutes that allow for the form of punishment. However, in March 2019,
the Governor of the state issued an executive order using his powers as the leader of the state as
provided for by the constitution to temporarily halt executions in the state. The executive order is
among the recent measures and decisions that the governor has taken that have been in
contradiction to the views of the U.S President Donald Trump. The issue has elicited mixed
feelings with some people seeing it as an ethical decision while other seeing it as a form of
suppression of justice to the victims of the people who had been sentenced to death in the state.
Regardless from the argument raised by Governor Gavin Newsom, the capital punishment
should at least be suspended if not removed for further consideration to ensure that the rights of
the victims and the perpetrators are protected and that the legal system is well prepared for the
form of punishment if it is returned. The suspension of the death penalty will prevent the
execution of people who may be guilty, solve the issue of racial disparity among the death row
