Question description

So is marketing or advertising creating the need or desire out of thin air? Do they make the public think they want this device or food or car, even before the public knows about it?  Or are they generally just marketing to the public's actual desires? Although I think you touch upon this in your initial post, I'd like you to address this issue more directly.
