Response to a classmate's post (Ayinda):

Chapter 12 Essay – Congress

Congress is, “…the most important representative institution in American government,” (pg. 473) because it gives Americans a voice.  Congress is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate.  The House of Representatives is a branch consisting of 435 representatives, 53 of which are from California alone.  The Senate is a branch consisting of 100 senators, 2 from each state.

Congress gives us a voice.  It is the people we elect from our own towns that get to be our voice in Congress.  It is far more representative than the presidency because the president has to pay attention to everybody in the country, which is roughly 327 million people.  The president tries to fulfill all of our needs but fails in listening to each person individually, so representation within each American is not successful.  It is more representative in the federal courts and state government, because these people usually represent states and districts as a whole.  Congress is the closest personal relationship we have with the people that represent us.  Our congressmen and congresswomen are the closest we have to making direct institutional change in our communities.

I think Congress is pretty good with representing it’s people.  I do not see any other possible ways that Congress can reform its ways to make sure we are represented, because it already does the best job it can.  Congressmen and women are given positions that take care of each district.  Districts are already broken up in the best way possible, so I honestly do not see any other improvements we can make in the future.  The current debate on several issues today will, I think remain the same.  We might, in the next couple of years, see a difference in some of the laws, only because the Democrats are now taking over the House.  There might be a spark and change in some sort of issues we are facing today, but I doubt anything good will come out of them.

I see the future of the Congress going the same way it has in the past 40 years.  Republicans and Democrats take turns being in control of the House and Senate, so I see nothing significantly different happening in the future.  Maybe I am not involved in politics as much as I should be, or do not care enough to notice any small changes, but I have extremely little faith in seeing a future change.
