Similarities and Differences Between the Shia and Sunni
There are many sects of the Islamic religion which many Muslims align themselves
into through believing in the teaching and practices that resonate with the sects. Some of the
sects of the Islamic religion include the Sunni, Shia, and the Ahmadiyya. Even with the
differences in denomination, the main sects of the Islamic religion that many people are
aware of are the Sunni and the Shia. The Sunni Muslims are the largest denomination of the
Islam religion sect, and they are also known as the Ahl as-Sunnah. The word Sunni is derived
from the word Sunnah, which means the teachings and the practices which were conducted
by Prophet Muhammad. The Sunni comprises of almost ninety percent of the Muslims while
the Shia holds the ten percent. The Sunni consider themselves a secular and conservative
group, whilst the Shia are recognized as traditional and orthodox (Mervin et al., 2013). The
difference between the Sunni and the Shia arises from leadership, especially on who was the
legitimate successor of prophet Muhammad, which divided the Muslims into the two sects.
