Literature Review: Effects of Modern technology on office management

The purpose of this paper is to present past knowledge with regards to how emerging or
modern technologies affect office management. For the fact finding, four research papers based
on previous studies were used to gather the information. This paper therefore presents the
information obtained with regards to the topic of interest.
The first research paper was with regards to a quantitative study, “The effect of modern
office technology on management performance: Durban Westville”, carried out by Mashau
Pfano and Andrisha Beharry. To carry out the study, the researchers used questionnaires
whereby 67 business managers were surveyed on the extent to which there was availability of
modern technology in their offices and the usage of this technology. The findings from the study
was that most businesses purchase and make use of modern technology regardless of cost.
Businesses will still buy modern technology even if it is expensive. The reason for this is that
most managers believe that the technology is very important in the workplace.
Another finding by the study was that most managers are aware that the modern
technologies also pose risks to the organization. Most managers therefore exploit the
opportunities of the technology and try to mitigate on the risks posed by the technologies. The
study also indicated that obtaining the modern technology was easy with about 93% of the
surveyed managers indicating that they could easily acquire the technology. The overall finding
of the study was that there was a positive relationship between managers’ performance and the
use of modern technologies. Most managers (90%) believe that technology makes work easier
and improves efficiency thereby improving their overall performance as managers.
